So you want to become a
Business and Marketing Teacher?
Congrats! You've chosen an awesome future career. To get there, you'll need a few things first. No worries; we got you covered.
Degree in Business/Marketing Education
Several universities in Missouri have degree programs in business or marketing education. After taking all the needed courses at a university and passing certification exams and background checks, you will be allowed to teach business and marketing at any Missouri high school.
Many of these schools offer both traditional and alternative ways to obtain your teaching certificate. The traditional way is to complete a four-year business or marketing education degree with a semester of student teaching. The alternative way is for those who have a 4-year degree, usually in business or marketing, have been in the industry and realized that they needed a career change. They are usually wanting the set hours and flexibility that working at a school can provide. These people will need to take additional graduate-level college classes within their first couple years of teaching to obtain an alternative teaching certificate.
Marketing Education vs Business Education
There are very limited "true" marketing education programs across the state. However, there are quite a few business education programs. If you want to teach marketing but your top college doesn't offer marketing education but does offer business education, then you can enroll in a business education degree program. You will want to take more marketing courses for your electives and then take the certification exam in marketing education along with the certification exam in business education. It is highly encouraged to get a certification in both areas anyway. You'll have more job opportunities if you get certified in both business and marketing.
Student Teaching
During your last semester of your traditional degree program, you will complete one semester of student teaching. During this time, you are paired with an experienced business or marketing teacher who will show you the ropes of managing real classrooms full of excited students and help you with the elements of teaching that are hard to replicate in a college classroom.
